So, let’s talk about the color red. What emotions come to mind? Love? Passion? Anger? Excitement?
Actually, red is an interesting color. Those in the marketing industry are aware of the effects of red on our psyche. Have you ever wondered why many food logos are red? Coca-Cola, KFC, McDonald’s, Campbell Soup, Pizza Hut, Popeyes, Wendy’s, Redbull, Dairy Queen, Heinz, and Budweiser, to name only a few, have red logos. Why, you ask? Well, red is known to stimulate the appetite. What? Stimulate my appetite? Yes. It also increases the body’s metabolism, raises respirations and blood pressure. The fight or flight response.
But wait. Other logos not in the food industry use red in their logos. What hidden effect does that have you may ask? Red is attention grabbing. Think: Stop sign. It also has a spur to action effect. So companies such as CNN, Time, Target, Lego, Puma, K Mart, Netflix, Exxon, and YouTube use red to grab a consumer’s attention and subtly spur to urge to buy their product.
In color psychology, red is associated with love, energy, passion, action, desire, courage, excitement, and warmth.
Red grabs your attention and says, HERE I AM….HERE I AM.
So the next time you reach for that can of soup in the grocery, notice the colors on the label. Which one attracts your attention or nudges you to buy it?
Here are a couple of more examples using the color red.
